10 Date Night Spots in St. Louis, and What to Ask at Each
2026-10-15

St. Louis is two cities for a date, and they are ten minutes apart. Clayton is where you go when the evening should look like something. The city neighbourhoods, Botanical Heights and Fox Park and Tower Grove, are where you go when you want the food to be the point and nobody to be dressed up.
Ten spots below, each with one question worth asking there. Eight are places that get named by people who eat out here; two cost almost nothing, because this is the rare city where the museums are free and nobody uses that for a date.
Checked in October 2026.
Indo
Botanical Heights
The one that gets called the best restaurant in the city, and has kept the title for years. Sit at the counter if you can: watching the kitchen gives you something to talk about when the conversation needs a break.
Ask each other: What is something you would happily eat every week for a year?
Akar
Clayton
Small, dark and Malaysian, in a part of Clayton that is otherwise steakhouses and office towers. The surprise of the room does half the work of the evening.
Ask each other: When did something surprise you recently in a way you liked?
Little Fox
Fox Park
A neighbourhood restaurant that happens to be very good, on a corner you would not find unless you were looking. Works for a first date because nobody is performing.
Ask each other: What is a place you would take someone to show them who you are?
Scout's
Midtown
The one people recommend for a first date and a fiftieth, which is a rare thing for a restaurant to pull off. Good before anything at the Fox or Grand Center.
Ask each other: What is something you have done the same way for years and still enjoy?
Sardella
Clayton
Italian in the loose sense, bright room, and the kind of menu where you order three things to share instead of two mains. Easier conversation than a steakhouse.
Ask each other: What do you always order when you are sharing, and what do you refuse to share?
Vicia
Central West End
Vegetables as the main event, which sounds like a compromise and is not. The tasting menu is the version to book when the evening is an anniversary.
Ask each other: What is something you were sure you did not like until somebody made it properly?
Yellowbelly
Central West End
Tropical, loud, seafood and cocktails, and the opposite of a quiet tasting menu. Right when the week has been heavy and neither of you wants reverence.
Ask each other: What is the last thing that made you feel like you were on holiday?
Louie
DeMun
Pasta and wood-fired pizza in a small room on a neighbourhood corner, with a wait that locals accept without complaining. Go early or plan to stand outside for a while.
Ask each other: What is worth waiting for, and what have you stopped waiting for?
Forest Parkeasy on the wallet
Forest Park
Free, and bigger than Central Park. The zoo, the art museum and the history museum charge nothing, which makes an afternoon here the cheapest good date in the country.
Ask each other: What did you want to be when you were small, and what did you love about it?
City Museumeasy on the wallet
Downtown
Eighteen dollars to climb through tunnels and slides built out of salvaged buildings. It is a children's museum that adults take dates to, and it tells you quickly how somebody handles looking silly.
Ask each other: When did you last do something just because it looked fun, with no other reason?
Pick the side of the city before you pick the place
Clayton and the city neighbourhoods want different evenings. Clayton is valet, a proper room and a reservation made a week ago. Botanical Heights, Fox Park and DeMun are a corner building with twelve tables, where the plan is dinner and then a walk to wherever is open.
The free museums are the thing St. Louis has that almost nowhere else does, and almost nobody uses them on a date because free reads as low effort. It is the opposite: an afternoon at the art museum and then dinner nearby costs the price of dinner and looks like you thought about it.
If it is a first date, pick a neighbourhood restaurant and go early. If it is an anniversary, book Vicia two weeks out and treat the evening as the plan rather than the start of one.
