11 Date Night Spots in San Diego, and What to Ask at Each

San Diego has a tourist version and a local version, and they barely overlap. The tourist one is the Gaslamp Quarter. The local one is North Park, South Park, Mission Hills, and a set of bars you get into by pushing on something that does not look like a door.
Eleven spots below, each with one question worth asking there. Nine are what locals name; two are cheap, which in a city with this much coastline is easy.

Noble Experiment
East Village, through Neighborhood
The most famous hidden bar in the city. You walk into a burger restaurant and push the right stack of beer kegs. Tiny inside, walls covered in gold skulls, and you have to message ahead for a table.

La Jolla, inside UTC mall
A nationally recognised cocktail bar hidden inside a shopping centre, which should be a joke and is instead one of the best rooms in California. Go through the bottle shop.

rooftop above Rare Form, East Village
A rooftop tiki bar up a staircase most people walk past. Loud, colourful and completely unserious, which makes it the best second stop on this list.

Kearny Mesa
There is a secret entrance through what looks like a Chinese apothecary. Worth going for that alone, and then staying because the food is genuinely good.

On an unremarkable corner, and a local favourite for long enough that the refresh had to keep the same feel. The room and the lighting do half the work.

North Park
A loud French bistro that behaves like a night out rather than a dinner. Better when you are in the mood to be around people instead of hiding from them.

Rooftop with close to a full panorama of the coastal skyline. Time it for the light rather than the menu, and book the outside.

Little Italy
Swanky in a speakeasy way, with creative drinks and a lasagna people specifically mention. Good for the date where you want to eat properly and still be somewhere with a mood.

North Park on foot
30th Street, North Park
Not a venue, a walk. Craft cocktails, small plates and a younger crowd than downtown, packed into enough blocks that you never need a car between stops.

Point Loma
Free, on the edge of the continent, and the best forty minutes in the city on a clear evening. Get there early enough to find somewhere to sit.

The gardens and the architecture cost nothing, and after five the tour groups have gone. Several museums do free evenings on rotation; check which before you go.

The hidden bars need a plan, the coast does not
Noble Experiment and Raised by Wolves both want you to sort a table out in advance, and both are small enough that turning up hopefully is how you end up somewhere else. Sort it on a Tuesday for a Friday.
Everything on the coast works the other way round. Do not book, do not plan, just go before sunset and give yourselves nowhere to be afterwards.
