50 Questions to Ask Your Girlfriend

2026-09-28

Two rounded blob characters at a kitchen table in early morning light, one holding a steaming mug, a window behind them

The problem with most question lists is that they are written to sound deep rather than to be answered. Nobody has a ready answer to "what is your greatest fear", and the silence that follows is not intimacy, it is homework.

These fifty are sorted by how much time they need instead of by how profound they sound. The first group survives a noisy breakfast. The last group does not.

One thing worth saying before you start: answer them yourself too. A question asked and not answered turns a conversation into an interview, and she will notice within three.

Breakfast ones

Short answers, no setup needed. Good for the fifteen minutes before someone has to leave.

  1. What is the best thing that happened to you this week that you did not mention?

  2. What is the first thing you would do with a free afternoon?

  4. Which small thing ruins your mood far more than it should?

  5. What is a compliment you got once and never forgot?

  6. What do you do when you cannot sleep?

  7. Which shop could you spend an hour in without buying anything?

  8. What is your version of a perfect Sunday morning?

  9. Which of your habits did you get from someone in your family?

  10. What is the most ridiculous thing you have ever been genuinely competitive about?

  11. What would you learn to do if it only took a weekend?

  12. What is the last thing you saved because you thought I would like it?

  13. Which part of the day are you least yourself in?

A bit further in

Still answerable on the spot, but the answers tell you something you would not have guessed.

  1. What is something you have got much better at in the last two years?

  2. What did you think being an adult would feel like?

  3. Who do you go to when something goes wrong, and why that person?

  4. What is a rule you grew up with that you have quietly dropped?

  5. When you are quiet, what is it usually about?

  6. What is something you are proud of that nobody ever congratulates you for?

  7. Which decision are you still glad you made?

  8. What do you do with a compliment when you do not believe it?

  9. What is the most tired you have ever been, and what were you doing?

  10. Which friendship changed you the most?

  11. What is something you want to be asked about more often?

  12. Where do you feel most like the version of yourself you like?

  13. What is a skill you wish you had started learning ten years ago?

About us

These are about the relationship rather than the person. Ask them when neither of you is about to stand up.

  1. What is the first thing you noticed about me that you never mentioned?

  2. When did you stop wondering whether this would work?

  3. What do I do that makes a bad day better without me realising?

  4. What do you hold back from telling me, and what would make it easier?

  5. Which of our arguments do you think we got right?

  6. What is something you have wanted to ask me and not asked?

  7. What would you like more of from me that you have never requested?

  8. Which small routine of ours would you defend to anyone?

  9. When do you feel closest to me, and is it what I would guess?

  10. What is one thing I misunderstand about you?

  11. What do you want our ordinary week to look like in five years?

  12. What have you changed your mind about since we met?

Lights off, no plans after

The ones that need room and a bit of dark. Do not start these while one of you is looking for keys.

  1. What are you most afraid of that you rarely say out loud?

  2. What is a life you sometimes imagine and did not choose?

  3. What would you do with a year off from everything?

  4. Who are you still trying to prove something to?

  5. What do you want to have let go of by this time next year?

  6. What is something you forgave without ever discussing it?

  7. Which year of your life would you live again exactly as it was?

  8. What do people misread about you when they first meet you?

  9. What would you say to yourself at nineteen if she would actually listen?

  10. What do you want that feels slightly too big to say?

  11. What are you grateful for now that you would not have noticed a year ago?

  12. What would you want me to remember about you if I forgot everything else?

Two or three a night, not fifty

The list is long so you do not run out, not so you get through it. Asked in one sitting, the answers get shorter with every question, which is the opposite of what you wanted.

When one lands, stop and stay there. The question you make up after a surprising answer is always better than the next one written down.
