45 Questions to Ask Your Crush Without Being Weird

2026-10-15

Two rounded blob characters on opposite ends of a long bench, one glancing sideways at the other, autumn leaves on the ground between them

The hard part about a crush is not what to say. It is that everything you say is being graded by you, twice, before it leaves your hands.

Which is how people end up sending "hey" for three weeks. A question with somewhere to go solves it, because it moves the attention off you and onto them, and because an answer gives you something to reply to that is not your own nerves.

Forty-five below, grouped by how much nerve each one takes. Start at the top. The ones further down stop being weird once the ones above them have gone well.

Safe to send today

Nothing here reveals anything. They work in a group chat, in a hallway, or at one in the morning.

  1. What is the best thing that happened to you this week that nobody asked about?

  2. What are you putting off right now?

  3. What is the last thing you saved to send to someone?

  4. Are you the person who replies instantly or three days later?

  5. What is something small that made today better?

  6. What do you listen to when you are not trying to impress anyone?

  7. What is your order at the place you always end up at?

  8. What were you like at fourteen, in one word?

  9. What is the weirdest thing in your camera roll right now?

  10. What is a show everyone loves that you quietly gave up on?

  11. Do you like being busy or do you just pretend to?

  12. What is the most recent thing you got unreasonably good at?

Once they are replying fast

These ask for a little more of them. Send one, not three. A list of questions reads as a form.

  1. What is something you changed your mind about recently?

  2. What do people get wrong about you at first?

  3. What were you absolutely certain about at eighteen?

  4. Who do you call when something goes well?

  5. What is a decision you made that nobody around you understood?

  6. What is the part of your week you actually look forward to?

  7. What do you do when you are annoyed and cannot say so?

  8. What is something you own that you would not replace if it broke?

  9. Where do you go when you want to be left alone?

  10. What is the last thing you were genuinely nervous about?

  11. What did you want to be before you knew it was unrealistic?

  12. What is a compliment you got that you still think about?

When you already know they like you back

This group only works after the other two. Sent cold, every one of them is a lot.

  1. What is the thing you notice first about someone?

  2. What makes you decide you want to see somebody again?

  3. Are you better at starting things or finishing them?

  4. What does a good day with someone look like to you?

  5. What do you need from people that you find hard to ask for?

  6. What is the nicest thing anyone has done for you without being asked?

  7. What made you first think I was worth talking to?

  8. What would make you say yes to something on a Tuesday?

  9. What is the last thing that made you feel like a kid?

  10. What are you looking forward to that is further away than next month?

  11. What is something you would want someone to know early?

The silly ones that save a dead conversation

Keep two of these in your pocket. They work when a thread has gone quiet and neither of you wants to be the one who let it die.

  1. What is a hill you would die on that affects nobody?

  2. What is the worst advice you have ever been given with confidence?

  3. What is your most useless talent?

  4. What food would you eat every day for a month without complaining?

  5. What is the pettiest reason you have ever stopped liking something?

  6. If your week had a title, what would this one be called?

  7. What would you be dangerously good at if you had unlimited free time?

  8. What is the last thing you looked up because you were too embarrassed to ask?

  9. What is an opinion you have only because of one bad experience?

  10. What is something you are irrationally competitive about?

Three to never send

"Do you like me?" It makes them do the hard part for both of you, and it turns the next thing they say into a verdict instead of an answer. If you want to know, say something about yourself and watch what comes back.

Anything about who else they are talking to. There is no gentle version. The question tells them you are counting, and counting is the opposite of the thing you are trying to be.

"Why are you being so quiet?" Sent to someone who has not replied, this is a second message about the first message, and it is louder than it looks on your screen.

And one that is not a question: answer the ones you ask. A thread where you ask and they answer is a screening, not a conversation, and the person being screened always knows.
